According to Google, way back in the ancient mists of time, the Roman Emperor Claudius 11 decreed that young men should be forbidden to marry because single men made better soldiers. A romantic young priest named Valentine defied Claudius, secretly marrying young couples. For his troubles he was martyred in 496AD and Saint Pope Gelasius set aside 14 February to honour him.
So the day fast approaches, you will probably notice men wandering around with troubled looks, unsure whether to buy their loved ones the dozen long stemmed roses, the heart shaped box of chocolates or the red satin negligee. I personally don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day but do understand that it is a special day for many people who like to declare their love with romantic gifts.
In my experience men want to buy lovely underwear for their partners but are troubled by it and don’t know how to go about it. Whilst I feel women should buy their own underwear, if you think he may be tempted to go down the underwear route with the gift buying, maybe you could show him this article first which is about what things he needs to consider when buying you lingerie!
It doesn’t have to be red, but please try to avoid the black and red option – far too tacky. Steer clear from white too – a bit boring for Valentine’s. Think about the clothes and colours she wears every day and try to look out for these colours in lingerie. These are likely to be colours she feels great in!
The Brand and Type
Do have a rummage in her underwear drawer. Does she favour good old M&S or is she a Victoria’s Secret kind of girl? The label will tell you the brand. Maybe you could go all out and treat her to something special from Agent Provocateur? Does she prefer full cup or balconette, wired or non wired?
We ladies go to a lot of trouble to make sure we are wearing the correct size and we should be visiting a professional bra fitter every six months. The rules here are the centre of the bra should rest on the rib cage and the breasts should fit within the bra cup fully (otherwise the cup size is wrong). Also, you should only be able to get one finger up the back of the bra under the strap (otherwise the bra size is wrong). Again, look at recently purchased bras. The bra and size of the cup will be on the label. They vary a lot depending on the brand so you need to buy the same brand and size/cup size as on the existing label. If you are not sure, take it with you!
The first point here is they must match the bra – again in a favourite colour. Secondly, does she wear a full brief to cover her tummy (ala Bridget Jones) or does she favour a mini-brief or thong (ala Pamela Anderson)? Buy what she wears most, based on more research from her underwear drawer. Always buy at least three pairs so she can wear matching underwear on a number of days. It’s amazing how fabulous a girl feels when she is wearing matching underwear!
If all this sounds just too confusing, you can’t go wrong with a beautiful silk robe!
So your partner should be a bit wiser now – fingers crossed you will receive something beautiful that you can both enjoy on Valentine’s Day.
Of course you can always treat yourself and choose to buy your own lingerie for Valentine’s or any other time, whether you celebrate Valentine’s Day or not.
