So it is that time of year when teenage girls get excited about choosing their Prom outfits and dads are filled with dread just thinking about that dent in their bank balance. Prom season has now become HUGE in the UK. There was never anything like it when I was a teenager. Yes, we had school discos but they didn’t require us to dress in sparkly dresses. I was even underwhelmed by my First Holy Communion dress as my Mum refused point blank to let me wear a “sticky out” dress. Mine was a simple cotton straight tunic dress with daisy applique. Looking back at it, it was really cute but I wanted a “sticky out” one :-(.

I was recently invited to Manchester Arndale to go and take a look at some of the styles of dresses currently available at their stores. I was really interested to discover that the typical Mancunian mother starts discussing outfits with her daughter FIVE months before the event. PLUS the average spend now for a prom outfit, including beauty treatments and cars is £428!!! Wowsers! Basically, mums are prepared to go ALL OUT to ensure their daughter draws envious looks from other Prom goers. Nearly 40 per cent said they would consider a Personal Stylist to ensure their daughter looks the business. I actually did a Colour and Style Consultation for a 16 year old in January which included advice on her Prom dress.

Popular styles in Manchester right now vary from full length fitted dresses in pastel shades to shorter styles that can be worn again. Personal Stylist at Manchester Arndale, Debs Hatfield is available for free advice on Prom dresses. When I asked her what her top tips were for Prom dressing she said this “Pare down the jewellery if you have a detailed dress and don’t go OTT on the tan” Wise words indeed.

So, on to the clothes. Our first stop was Pastiche. This shop is jam packed full of sequins, frills and glitter! A real princess paradise! Some of their dresses are quite expensive, but they offer a payment plan to help with this if required. Pastiche go that extra mile when it comes to Prom dresses as they carefully keep a record of everyone’s details and will only sell one style of dress per school. We saw a few of the dresses being modelled and this was my favourite – you really will make an entrance in red!

Pastiche really does have something to suit all tastes from real show stoppers to elegant and chic. Sleek styles are very popular this season as opposed to the more traditional princess styles. Backless is a also a popular trend and Mancunian girls are loving purple this year. Purple is a great choice for your Prom dress as it is a “universal” colour that suits most skin tones.

Next stop was Coast – where we were greeted by some beautiful bright dresses!

Coast really is a go to store for special occasion outfits. You know that you can walk into Coast and come out with the whole outfit – dress, shoes, bag, stole, jewellery – the whole shebang! Their best selling dress this season is the Michegan – available in a full length version and also a shorter one. This has also been very popular for bridesmaids. Did you know that some Coast dresses have a pocket in the shoulder straps in which you can hook your bra to keep it concealed? Nifty eh?

I love the pretty lilac colour of this gorgeous, luxurious floor-sweeping gown – guaranteed to put you in the limelight. The Michigan maxi dress has a stunning sweetheart neckline and boning in the bodice for a sleek and soft look. The dress features lustrous gathered satin detail at the waist which beautifully flatters your curves. The waterfall drape detail on the skirt adds just the right amount of romance to this head turning gown.

At Coast you can book a Style Lounge appointment and spend as long as you want trying on dresses with expert help and refreshments on hand.

The final stop for clothes was Lipsy. Lipsy is a young, funky and fresh brand just perfect for Prom dressing. From short and sassy cocktail styles to long red carpet worthy dresses and sultry midi length looks. A Lipsy dress makes it a stylish Prom night to remember. Their Prom range is very affordable – dads love Lipsy! Ah, but then that leaves money left over to spend on a fabulous pair of shoes …

Talking of shoes, we finished our tour in Aldo. Whether you are looking for a simple nude pump (a popular choice right now) or you want to go for all out glamour in these super sparkly lovelies – Aldo is where it’s at.

KEEP IT SUNNY SIDE UP THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Well, the weather certainly isn’t sunny in Manchester right now but if you can’t have the sunshine, you can BE the sunshine! Yellow, the colour associated with all things happy and bright, is often viewed as a ‘tricky’ shade to wear. It is certainly true that yellow... […]
