One of the key trends on the Spring/Summer 2016 catwalks was ruffles. But these ruffles were not just any ruffles – these were DRAMATIC ruffles and some were anything but girlie!

Proenza Schouler gave us sculptural ruffles. Oscar de la Renta gave us Spanish influenced ruffles and Jason Wu’s collection was fiercely feminine. However, Mary Katrantzou’s offering was the prettiest of them all!

So, whether they are framing the face or snaking around your legs, archictural ruffles will be providing a very dramatic look this season.

How to wear this season’s ruffles

Well, the answer is simple. Keep everything else minimal and let your ruffles do the talking. A sleek, slicked back pony tail is bang on trend this season and, by coincidence, looks great with ruffles! No need to whack on the bling either. They will only confuse and distract the eye with those beautiful, undulating ruffles.

Make sure you keep the ruffles away from the parts of your body that are more full. So, for a balanced look, if you are pear or triangle shape, rock your ruffles up top and if you are blessed with a large bosom, wear them on your bottom half.

If you have a small bust, you can give the appearance of fullness in this area by having a horizontal line of ruffles from shoulder to shoulder.

If you are conscious that ruffles may add extra volume to your body, try a ruffled sleeve. Or how about a fab ruffled shoe?

If you are petite, be careful of large ruffles as they may overpower your frame (unless you have a Dramatic style personality of course!)

Here are some of my picks from the High Street

The grey knit dress from ASOS creates a very flattering diagonal line and would be very easy to dress up or down.
I LOVE this colourful dress from Jolie Moi at House of Fraser (currently in the sale too). It has a real retro feel and the print is so fun! It might just end up in my shopping basket…
The chic knit from Mint Velvet features an asymmetric hem for a modern element whilst frilled detailing completes a pretty style. This would look great teamed with skinny jeans and leather boots for a sleek look.
OK so the Irregular Choice shoes aren’t reeeeally a ruffle but I searched high and low for ruffle shoes and aren’t these just so pretty?

How will you be wearing ruffles this season?

THE colour for Autumn/Winter 2017 is red. The catwalks were awash with it at the A/W ’17 shows and as it slowly starts to hit the High Street I’m offering you my expert advice on how to wear it. It is the color of sexuality and can stimulate deeper and more intimate passions in... […]
